Honorable Mathew Wale, Leader of Opposition, MP Aoke Langalanga

The Leader of Opposition Hon. Matthew Wale has called on Minister of Foreign Affairs Hon. Jeremiah Manele to stop misleading the public in his warning to Premier Suidani of Malaita Province.

Hon. Wale said the Foreign Minister should focus his efforts on foreign affairs and our international relations. There are other ministers who are responsible for internal governance matters.

Further, Hon. Wale said, during Solomon Islands’ diplomatic relations with the Republic of China, Taiwan, Guadalcanal established and enjoyed productive relations with Guangdong Province as proxy for the PRC.

He said successive governments respected Guadalcanal provinces decision to enter into that relationship. Why is Malaita being targeted by this government?” Hon. Wale questions.

“In many countries in the region and around the world, provinces and states are permitted to pursue relations with foreign states and governments to pursue their interests.

“The government needs to be open-minded on this matter and encourage all provinces to seek such relationships.

“Hon. Manele cannot continue to ostracize Malaita province on the government’s decision on recognizing PRC,” says Hon. Wale.

The Opposition Leader goes on to add that, “A more embracive approach needs to be taken. Malaita province’s grievance continues to be that the government failed in its promise and did not consult it on the decision. This is a legitimate grievance that cannot be overcome with statements like that made by Hon. Manele”.
